A mentor once told me, “The person with the plan always wins.” I have always followed that advice, however, it is only part of the story. Yes, you need to know where you are going, but there are two other equally important elements: you must also be able to effectively communicate your plan and then execute it with discipline and rigor, or else it will fall short.
With my last business, I came to a point where it was not being capital efficient and had lost my focus and planning discipline. I was adept at creating the 5-year long-term plan that was put into a two-inch binder and onto a shelf. This plan would usually stay there until it was updated once a year.
I was aware that the viewpoint of business planning had shifted and there were new business solution methods for both long-term strategic and annual planning. I did some searching on the web and it happened that STUCK was also located in Milwaukee I called and had a great discussion with Jerry Jendusa. Everything he said and the methods he described made complete sense and kept the process simple. Simplifying the planning process to a single-page plan would be easier to follow and communicate to my employees. Plus, the methods Jerry and his team developed
had already gone through the road bumps and were tested in building his company.
If you are a business owner, it may be critical to update your planning process now, as well. Many companies have thrown out their existing strategic plan to focus on countering the economic disruption. Agile, short-term planning, consolidated to a single-page plan process, can propel a rapid response to market changes. It will boost team alignment to the plan and improve accountability to the execution process from your employees. Further, new tools can help managers drive:
• Key tasks and projects
• Execution tempo
• Overall business growth
To drive your plan, you will need to focus on the five key pillars of growth as defined by the STUCK Breakthrough Strategies: Financial Growth, Customer Delight (Exceeding Expectations), Innovation, Productivity, Great Place To Work (People & Culture). You will create strategic deployment initiatives for each of these pillars and develop measurable targets to achieve and track throughout the year. In addition, the STUCK Platform system provides 90-day forecasting and Must Do/Can’t Miss task tracking that will help you drive your plan and achieve your targets. The execution process will be reviewed monthly during the Monthly Action Plan (MAP) meetings. You will be surprised how rallying staff around a common purpose by creating clarity of mission and vision, key initiatives and targets, the planning platform helps owners/leaders create unity amongst staff under the themes of continuous improvement, growth and opportunity creation.
We encourage business owners to update their skills and take advantage of what other owners have learned and developed in their drive for growth. It never hurts to have a new and more efficient tool in your tool kit.
